I just came across this piece by Richard C. Halverson that was a devotional and prayer presented in the US Senate on Nov. 10, 1981, when Halverson was the Chaplain of the Senate. Just imagine, over thirty years ago! Of course Paul nailed it 2K years ago. RMF
Men and Men and God
Homosexuality is not the real threat.
It’s a profound problem that deserves our serious attention, our concern and compassion. But the threat is not in homosexuality as such. The real issue is not that people are “gay,” but that the “gay” movement insists on promoting gayness as a legitimate lifestyle.
This is the root issue, the cosmic issue throughout history: Calling good what God calls evil. It is the fundamental expression of human anarchy in defiance of God’s moral order. It is the original temptation marking humanity’s descent from God and authentic goodness.
It is not enough that we transgress God’s law. Humans must also reject the very idea of order – make immorality moral – sanctify sin.
It is the futile human effort to escape guilt – the relentless, inescapable consequence of moral aberration.
“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie….Because of this,m God gave them over to shameful lusts….Men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion” (Romans 1:25-27).
“Deliver us, O Lord, from the tyranny of the trivial. Let us not be like chi8ldren playing games on the mouth of a volcano, indifferent to the boiling and belching underneath. Sensitize us to the deepest issues, the issues beneath the issues, of national restlessness and fear.
“Keep us from preoccupation with symptoms while ignoring causes. Let us not be busy rearranging the furniture while the house is burning down….”
